Team 51

Coming together is a beginning.  Keeping together is progress.  Working together is success.”  Henry Ford

Team 51 began at Duke’s back in 2007.   It started off like any other warm summer night in Malibu would when you toss in a couple of beers, taco Tuesday and a couple ambitious entrepreneurs.  Something special happened that night.  If we could bottle it up and sell the energy present that night it would literally change civilization as we know it.  As the saying goes, nothing is more powerful than an idea whose time has come.  And it had.

That night, we made a decision to unconditionally support one another as we take life by the horns, make more time for what matters most in life and really start living.   YES!  Thus Team 51 was born!

There are so many stories and moments that make Team 51 special, that by the following May, members of Team 51 (our “just press play on life club”) had quit a posh job (on May 1st aka 5/1 none-the-less) to pursue a passion and start a business, moved 2,000 miles away on a whim for an incredible business opportunity and another ran his first marathon ever, in under three hours.

While we all encounter amazing people in life, keeping those incredible people in our lives is a real skill worth harnessing.

Today Team 51 partakes in weekly phone calls to share wins, losses, goals, and brainstorm ways to overcome challenges and catch up on life even though the three of us all live in different cities. We started making the extra effort to connect and stay connected.   Someday never comes.  Someday is now.  Everyone has the time for his or her priorities even if it’s just a five-minute call to say, “Hey I’m busy, good to hear your voice – how can I help you this week?  Ok have a great day, talk to you soon!”

Team 51 recently decided to hike and climb Mount San Jacinto. The 16-mile 10-hour hike through sun, wind, sand and snow took every ounce of concentration at times and Ranger Rick was right about the FIVE FEET of snow.   Having only tennis shoes to tackle the terrain was challenging but nothing would have stopped the three of us that day.   We were on a mission.

Reaching the summit was an incredible feeling as adrenalin rushed through my entire body as we high fived and hugged at the top before quickly changing into dry socks and tee shirts.  Even better than reaching the summit was having Team 51 there to share it with!    You guys are the best and I’m already looking forward to next year’s trip!

This is beautiful! Absolutely beautiful! If anyone has any doubt about the power of and NEED for friendships, all they have to do is read this and be changed forever.
Today I had “stuff” to do and minimal time to do it. I had my time planned to the tee, and only had 45 minutes to get one thing done, then another block of 1 hour to get something else done. Both times were “interrupted” by a friend and a family member, and hence I didn’t get my “stuff” done. I was frustrated. Now I know to shut my mouth and toss these negative thoughts aside. I am SO lucky to have both of these people in my life, and am better for them – ten fold! Thanks Joe for opening my eyes to what I knew to be true, but had temporarily forgotten. YES!

Absolutely Kathleen we all need reminders!! SO glad you were able to relate to the post. I had a call with Team 51 this morning that helped me take action on something I’ve been putting off. We all need support and an occasional push from a trusted “Board of Advisors”
